For the first time, we took Bubbly & Banter on the road to visit some amazing friends in Beverly Hills. Usually, a 15-20 minute endeavor, this is an extended B&B (coming in at close to 50 minutes) because we stayed true to our roots and drank the whole bottle before ending the podcast. And, to drop some knowledge, a jeroboam is four bottles so, we were busy. In case you don’t want to listen to the whole thing, here are some places to jump to for interesting content:

3:30; 10:00, 19:00: Local, twitter, Yelp, etc. (local comes up again at 19:00)

8:40: why this group hates Foursquare

13:20: Are you drowning in your own Koolaid? And are you really moving the needle with those social media stuff?

15:00: Stop treating social media like traditional marketing

17:00: Engage with the people who are pissed, they care (forgive the bubbly refill break, this convo continues after)

23:20: Why consumer feedback for brands is crucial – and why you should listen

25:40: Promotion vs Connection (the old vs the new)

28:00: Crowdsourcing Vitamin Water label with Facebook

31:30: All the “You” campaigns – and, if your product sucks, no amount of PR/marketing money will help

34:15: Mark drops the LA vs SF bomb, the room reacts

38:50: Jeroboam is empty, Jean immediately asks re location of regular size backup bottle

40:10: The Rise of the Creative Class and why you should read this book

41:45: “We could open another bottle of champagne” @julzie – “Hey, his glass is empty and I’m not OK with that” @notcot

44:00: Nicole drops some knowledge from UofO that continues to drive her – if you are a creative, constant output requires constant input – and why Jean built a network of sites around this powerful idea

And, to recap the things that make Bubbly & Banter so amazing:

 Bubbly and Banter Episode 5

Today we are broadcasting from a new locale…..”Taxidermy Chic”, or Mark’s loft, so we apologize in advance for the echo…he’s got some super high ceilings.  We discuss the topic of where PR ends and product people start (and vice versa). And, the question of whether or not it’s important for PR people to gather product knowledge/experience.

Our guest, Marie Williams formerly an account executive at SHIFT Communications (now with Meraki), joined us for a French bottle of bubbly.  The bottle is Ariston Aspasie “Carte Blanche” Brut Champagne

Banter in the podcast includes understanding why PR is helpful in the product process, putting lipstick on a pig, beating a mistress and understanding the product cycle to incorporate it in the PR strategy.  We wrap it up with a quick review of the tasty bubbly.

Bubbly and Banter Episode 4

Being on Bubbly and Banter has some amazing perks: you get to spend 20 minutes chatting with Julie Crabill and Mark Johnson, plus you get to drink a fabulous bottle of sparkling wine.  How much, you might ask, does this cost?  The surprising answer is that it is totally free.  Yes, you can be on BandB: just contact us at bubblyandbanter AWT gmale DAWT cawm with an interesting topic and we’ll slot you in as soon as we can.

Today, Jennifer Usher, an Account Executive at SHIFT Communications, is our guest.  The topic: the latest generation of PR people.  The bubbly: J Vintage Brut 2000. The toast: “To a thick skin.” (a-men!)

Banter in this podcast range from how Jen got into PR (thanks to Chevy’s), when enterprise software companies should and shouldn’t worry about social media, the value of Oracle World and other large enterprise conferences, the worst AC (account coordinator) mistakes you can make, and the relationship between PR and product management. We end with Mark finding the book, Dickless Marketing, on Julie’s bookshelf.  Can I have another, “A-men”?

Bubbly and Banter Episode 3

This week’s edition of Bubbly & Banter features the beautiful, talented, and witty Jennifer Leggio (@mediaphyter and cohost of the Quick-n-Dirty podcast) with hosts Mark Johnson (@philosophygeek) and Julie Crabill (@julzie). Listen in to find out the real reason behind the @mediaphyter moniker. . .

Our original topic was going to be centered around the real cost of social media but, as can be expected over a bottle of fine bubbly, we meandered to even more interesting topics. We started talking about cost in terms of maintaining blogs, server space, and time, but then moved into talking about how each of us uses social media both for our “side” projects (blogs, twitter, etc.) and our actual jobs. Three perspectives: Jennifer is the professional blogger with a day job, Julie is the PR queen, and I am the product guy who likes to write on the side. We agree that we’re all brand stewards and have to be careful what we say – though we also agree that social networks can be inherently self-regulating.

Note: the sound quality isn’t perfect, but we’ll work on that for the next show.

As always, we appreciate retweets, comments, and suggestions for topics/guests!

Bubbly and Banter Episode 2

Bubbly & Banter is a new podcast from Julie Crabill (independent PR consultant) and Mark Johnson (program manager at Bing) focusing on PR, marketing, and product (an extension of our blog project). The idea behind the podcast is that we’ll invite a guest onto the show while we all share a bottle of bubbly, because we believe the best conversations happen while imbibing. This is our inaugural episode and therefore guestless. Instead of grilling some poor soul, we talk about our (sordid) history together. Mark was the product guy at Powerset and Julie was the VP at SHIFT, Powerset’s PR firm. We talk about how Powerset chose SHIFT from a long list of candidates and offer some advice about how other companies should choose a PR firm. The champagne: this week, we consumed a bottle of N.V. Launois Pere et Fils Champagne Brut Œil de Perdrix carried from France by Julie herself. Yum! If you’d like to be a guest in the future or have any feedback about topics, just drop us a line on Twitter. Enjoy!
