For the first time, we took Bubbly & Banter on the road to visit some amazing friends in Beverly Hills. Usually, a 15-20 minute endeavor, this is an extended B&B (coming in at close to 50 minutes) because we stayed true to our roots and drank the whole bottle before ending the podcast.

Today, Jennifer Usher, an Account Executive at SHIFT Communications, is our guest. The topic: the latest generation of PR people. The bubbly: J Vintage Brut 2000. The toast: “To a thick skin.” (a-men!)

Our original topic was going to be centered around the real cost of social media but, as can be expected over a bottle of fine bubbly, we meandered to even more interesting topics. We started talking about cost in terms of maintaining blogs, server space, and time, but then moved into talking about how each of us uses social media both for our “side” projects (blogs, twitter, etc.) and our actual jobs. Three perspectives: Jennifer is the professional blogger with a day job, Julie is the PR queen, and I am the product guy who likes to write on the side. We agree that we’re all brand stewards and have to be careful what we say – though we also agree that social networks can be inherently self-regulating.

Bubbly and Banter is a new podcast from Julie Crabill (independent PR consultant) and Mark Johnson (program manager at Bing) focusing on PR, marketing, and product (an extension of our blog project). The idea behind the podcast is that we’ll invite a guest onto the show while we all share a bottle of bubbly, because we believe the best conversations happen while imbibing. This is our inaugural episode and therefore guestless.
